A SIMPLE THEOLOGY OF PRAYER PART 1
Why Pray? (Understanding the Power and Purpose of Prayer)Lesson 4: Prayer Is about God
As we have already learned, prayer is not our way of getting things from God. Instead, it is God’s way to use imperfect people within His perfect plan to accomplish His will on earth. In this lesson we will dig deeper into this truth.
In this lesson you will:
• understand the cycle of prayer designed by God.
• understand your place in seeing God’s will be done on earth.
• gain an understanding of what it means to reign with Christ.
• see how knowing that you are seated in the heavenlies with Christ can transform your prayer life.
Reading:
• Forgotten Power – (Chapter 2, pg. 16 – top of 17 ending with Matthew 6:10)
• Exodus 17:8-16

Questions to Consider:
1. “All true prayer begins with God.” Explain why you agree or disagree with that statement. Is there another place or way you have always thought prayer originates? Explain.
2. In what way does the cycle of prayer as explained by Dave help you get a better grasp on the purpose of prayer? Do you agree with this description of how prayer works? Why or why not? What else would you add or what would you change?
3. Do you agree that we, as believers, are the weak link in the cycle of prayer? How does this weakness affect the work of God’s kingdom on earth? What can you/we do to strengthen our place within the cycle of prayer?
4. How does the biblical concept of being seated with Christ in the heavenlies change your perspective of prayer?
5. Why do you think the sovereign God has included us in His kingdom plans through prayer and action? Why doesn’t He just do everything Himself?
6. On page 16 of the reading, the question is asked, “What do you do in the world that truly touches the spirit realm?” Explain your response if it is something other than prayer.
7. Do you regularly pray for what is on the heart of God as expressed in His word (things like loving others, unity in the body of Christ, salvation for the lost, etc.)? Why or why not?
8. How does the story of Moses in Exodus 17 give you a picture of intercession? Discuss.
9. Based on the reading from Dave’s article: Prayer, Evangelism and the Purposes of God, discuss together how prayer and evangelism are connected in the kingdom of God.
10. Has this lesson given you a fresh perspective on the purpose and power of your own prayer life? Why or why not?
